How the conversion works
A litre is defined as exactly one cubic decimetre, so metric volume conversions are decimal shifts rather than approximations: one litre is 0.001 m³, and one millilitre is exactly one cubic centimetre. Imperial and US units run through the inch, which is exactly 2.54 cm and therefore makes a cubic inch exactly 16.387064 cm³. Everything is converted to cubic metres on those definitions before being expressed in the unit you chose, and a result that does not terminate is rounded for display and marked as approximate.
Supported units and gallon definitions
The two gallons on this page are not interchangeable. A US liquid gallon is 3.785411784 litres and an imperial gallon is 4.54609 litres, roughly 20% larger, so they are listed separately and never substituted for one another. Cooking cups are left out of this version because the cup has several competing definitions depending on country and context, and quietly picking one would produce confidently wrong results.
